America Siue India Nova - America...or maybe New India??
by Michael Mercator, circa 1600
The full title of the map is quite unruly. "America Siue India Nova ad magnea Gerardi Merca: toris aui Universalis imi: tationem in compendi um redacta" My fledgling knowledge of Latin is quite challenged by this name, especially considering this Latin is probably some sort of fancified Old Frankified Latin emerging the 1500's. My closest attempt at a translation is:
America, or New India
Based on Gerardi Mercator, my renowned Grandfather, character great and undiminished." (or, it could be "my renowned Grandfather, for sale and release)."
By Michael Mercator from Dutchland"
At any rate, it depicts the West Coast of North America as a big slug and Canada East as...red lips. um...eating a pickle?
